Frequently asked questions about loans in Greece
We have gathered clear answers to the questions you ask us most often: how a request goes ahead, which additional services we offer, what lenders and Tiresias look at, how the repayment is worked out, how a loan can be combined with a subsidy, and who we are. For questions about a particular type of financing, see its page: mortgage loan, business loan, agricultural loan.
How a request goes ahead
What happens after I send an enquiry?
- If you gave an email address, you receive a confirmation. We then contact you to assess your needs and work out the next move. If your request does not find a response on the current information, we will tell you clearly.
Does sending an enquiry commit me?
- No. An enquiry needs no signature and does not commit you to any lender. You can stop the process at any time and ask for your details to be deleted.
Can I send a request if I do not know which loan I need?
- Yes. Choose the category you think is closest and describe what you want to finance. When we speak, we identify the type of financing that applies to you.
How long does it take to get a decision?
- The time depends on the lender, the type of financing and how quickly the documents are gathered. A mortgage usually takes longer, because it includes a valuation and a legal check of the property. We give no guarantee about how long it will take. We do tell you clearly what the lender asks for at each stage.
Additional services
Can you take care of the documents, or of Tiresias and debt matters, for me?
- Yes, through our additional services. We gather, organise and check the documents, with the aim of a more complete and well-organised file. We also support you in checking your record with Tiresias (the Greek credit bureau) and in looking into options for settling debts to AADE (the tax authority) and e-EFKA (social security). The services are optional. €100 for individuals and sole traders, excluding VAT. For companies, by quotation. The cost is disclosed in writing before we start working together, and choosing them does not affect how your financing request is considered. See the additional services
Requirements and Tiresias
What are the basic requirements for getting a loan?
- Each lender applies its own criteria. Usually it looks at your income and how stable it is, your existing obligations (loan and card repayments), your credit history with Tiresias, any debts to the tax office and EFKA and, for a mortgage, the property and your own funds. The specific requirements of each category are given on its page.
What is Tiresias and how does it affect a request?
- Tiresias is the Greek credit bureau: the database where debts, late payments and bounced cheques are recorded. Lenders check it before every decision. A record does not necessarily lead to a refusal: what matters is its type, how old it is and whether the debt has been paid off or settled.
Can I see what Tiresias holds about me?
- Yes. You can ask Tiresias S.A. for the information it holds about you, and for anything inaccurate to be corrected. If a debt you have paid off still appears, keep the proof of payment. This check is useful before you submit a request. tiresias.gr
The repayment
How is the monthly repayment worked out?
- The monthly repayment comes from three things: the amount, the repayment period and the interest rate. A longer period means a smaller repayment, but a higher total cost in interest. The calculator on each loan page works out the repayment starting from the market average published by the Bank of Greece, and you can change the rate. Mortgage repayment calculator
What is the APRC?
- The Annual Percentage Rate of Charge (in Greek, ΣΕΠΕ). Beyond the interest, it includes the costs of the financing, such as file and valuation fees. It is the figure that lets you compare two offers on the same basis.
Subsidies
Can a loan be combined with a subsidy?
- Yes, in many programmes. The subsidy covers part of the investment and the rest is covered by your own funds or a loan. For farmers and businesses, you will find more information on the agricultural and business loan pages. Agricultural loan
